If you know someone with a little bit of experience and a tape measure, you can get a pretty good idea of what dimensions you need. Once you have that figured out, look on ebay. There are lots of quality quill stems at reasonable prices there.

One note: my 1992 Trek 970 fork is 1 1/8" threaded, so your 850 might, also. Measure twice, purchase once.
