i would still take the bike in to get the intial tune-up done. it should be free, right? if so, take advantage of it. then do your own maintance after that. they'll be in a better position to determine if you have any serious problems (like heatset, BB, crank, cassette, hub issues). if you're new to cycling, you may not know what's a potential problem or not. best to have your bike "cleared" through the LBS that you bought it from first.
