I think that we covered this in 7th grade.
It's a little more complicated than that (the
"yeah, but why
is it harder?" bit actually has to do with the how far away from the center point of the hub the force is being applied [how far out from the center is the chain pulling, essentially], regardless of the number of teeth) but that's the gist of it.
