If you plan to go on a long ride you should be eating as you go not waiting until you get hungry.

I've tried malto and it's fine, but all I do these days for a long ride is put about 300 Cals of Sugar plus a little gatorade powder in one bottle and a baggie with 6-8 dates in my back pocket. It's very convenient and works well for 3-5 hr rides. Sugar dissolves better than malto and is more convenient.
