thank you. I have stem mounted friction shifters so that should work just fine. I just wondered if the dish of the wheel would cause any problems (like be less sturdy). The wheel isn't quick release, but bolts so I think it should stay on just fine. It is just that the axle is longer on the 8 speed wheel? And by placing stress on the entire length of the 6 speed wheel, is it made weaker because of that?
Are you saying the 6 speed is spaced less than 135MM?
Don't know about your area, but my LBS has rear wheels with an 8 speed Shimano FH body for $45. Cheap wheel, but at least as "serviceable" as a 6 speed free wheel hub.
