+1 on that since the OP is posting to the "Southern California" regional forum from Missouri. (Not that that matters- I grew up in Southern California, but now I live outside of Portland, Oregon. My wife's cousins- also from SoCal- live in Missouri.)
Anyway: 27" tires that fit your old Schwinn are available at older, better-stocked bike shops. You can also find them at some large chain stores (Wal-Mart and the like) since there are still some bike they sell with 27" wheels and tires.
Unfortunately, these are are made in Taiwan or Indonesia. The last U.S. based manufacturer of bicycle tires stopped production 25 or more years ago.
