the more money you spend on the trunk rack the less damage you are going to get to your car and or bike. In general Saris trunk racks are junk, stay away... I have had to deal with Saris when customers come back when their racks have failed and dropped their bikes on the road. The Thule Speedway series (961XT should run you $109 and 962XT is $129) and Yakima Mighty Joe series (2 bike $119 and 3 bike $139) racks are your best bet as they have the best anti-sway cradles and seem to seat themselves on the car the best, but alot depends on the car you have as some racks wont fit certain cars. Shipping bikes runs between $75 and $100 if you go to UPS or FedEx.

Do you have a receiver on your car? If so Sportworks makes a very nice low mount (i.e. set your bike into the rack much like an upright roof carrier instead of hanging it from the frame) car rack called the modular series that will work on both 2" and 1.25" receivers either one should run you about $150 for a 1 bike rack, and can be expanded to carry one (for 1.25" and 2") or two (2" only) more bikes.

Problem with trunk racks is there is no way to lock them unless you run a cable through the frame of your car which isnt always possible, so if you are stopping half way and staying somewhere keep that in mind, I would hate for you to come out of a hotel room in the morning and find a car with no bike on the trunk.

Just my .02 from the perspective of a bike shop employee who sells this stuff all the time
