One of my thrills is when someone comes up and admires one of my bikes that I put together with scrounged parts. My tourer is literaly made from parts off of at least eight salvaged bikes, with only the levers, stem, and racks being new. One donor bike gave up nothing but one ring, and another the crankset it is now on.
I have ridden lots of centurys on one bike that I gave five bucks for, then put a decent new wheelset on, and another NOS frame that I built with more or less period parts from my collection. When people like them I do get a sense of pride in my hobby. And thats what that is to me, almost as much as riding. My hobby is building bikes from old parts.

But I don't scorn anyone who purchases things new, in fact, the more people who buy things new the better, because it means a steady flow of barely used tossed parts for my hobby(and some parts that have been ridden into the ground, wich means that it was worth the original purchasers money). And besides, whats wrong with someone wanting something new anyway?
For the record, I have owned some new bikes. But I will never be really fast enough to warrant the newest lightest thing, so I let my new bikes get old without replacing them.

And I am thinking about a new bike myself, been wanting a longtail of some sort. And they don't come in vintage, yet.
