AZT, When we did the Sr Games ITT, the organizers designed a "stupid", "silly", "Tourista" course. I cannot find a word that makes sense. We have an excellent TT course that has a great out and back on a two lane highway with wide bike lanes. The Sr. Games organizers set up four lanes at the start on the same road. For the 10K, there were two laps. So there was a normal turnaround for the first 2.5K. When the racer came back to the start, he was faced with a really narrow turnaround constrained by steel fence like the kind used to contain crowds in bike races. So many racers slowed too much so that they would not hit the barriers.

Take away... You may have a different course but cone turnaround technique and acceleration was at a premium at ours. I remember the course in LA was equally quirky in other ways. Part of the problem is they run both the 5k and 10k on the same course.
