My daughter rode hers to school 2 times, I was very afraid for the bike.
they are not the best school bikes as you cant carry anything on them.

I do my best to ignore that lovely stem you found,
dont cut the chain- test a nomal chain first.
see if you can get a narrow 5 freewheel in there, if you have a spare 120mm hub and freewheel you have plenty of time before the wheels show up.
if you going to paint it - braze on shift bosses and bottle bosses would be a great upgrade.
the levers normally go very far forward on the DT.
