I would counter that I am only interested in safe behavior - from me and them. There is a difference between goodwill and safe behavior. I don't much care how they FEEL about things, only that they behave safely. The best way to elicit safe behavior is to be predictable and responsible while trying not to make them have to react. I am not arguing that we should ride however we want and not be considerate - we should be mindful of other traffic users and our impact. I'm arguing about the motivation and this concept that we have to be ambassadors. I am not responsible for the behavior of others nor do I view cyclists as a group with group behavior.
This might be an environmental difference - I think your argument makes more sense in a suburban/rural setting where there aren't many cyclists and the etiquette isn't established. I'm an urban rider...and there are lots of us. Cars are used to it here. If I'm having a problem with a motorist, it's because a mistake was made. Most of the time it's going to be them, every now and then, I might goof. I really don't have many problems with drivers.
