Here's a couple of ideas to consider: Powergrips or Speedplay Drillium pedals.

I have Powergrips on both my recumbents, and Drilliums on all my upright bikes.

The Powergrips allow you to pull on the upstroke, keep your feet in position, and allow for easy in & out at stops.

The Drilliums keep my feet glued to the pedals with absolutely no movement or slippage. Nice and wide, too.

The Powergrips are cheap and work great; the Drilliums are expensive works of art that also work great.

Just a couple of others ideas for you to consider before shelling out big bucks for special pedals and shoes.

Good luck, and keep moving forward!
