Fortunately, mine hasn't misbehaved quite so badly but I had a Garmin GPS from maybe 10 years ago that died and could not be revived in any reasonable way. The "fix" was more expensive than the replacement at that point. Your (and my) Garmin 500 are not that out of date. It will be fixable or replaceable on warranty if you have not had it for too long.
