Went from fixed gear to single speed, what are the benefits of this?

I've even been riding fixed for a while now, about 2 years and I road 48x16 and 48x17 gear ratio but I got a knee injury and I changed over to single speed. Well anyways I went on a group ride with my lbc and it's an all road bike ride, so when we hit the spilt spoint I was in front of some roadies with 2k plus bikes, it was a 12 mile race spilt on mostly a flat surface, is it because I'm used to always pedalling or what? And with the single speed I feel like I get more tired on a climb, it's also on 48x16 ratio!
So will the single speed Help me with speed or endurance or what? Because if not I feel like going back to fixed, I should also mention I do ride with clipless pedals
