It's a mix of old and new designs. There are some really good engineers behind this product. Velonews has been testing them and really like them. They seem to be working on a cleat system to aid in walking off the bike but velonews is saying they are no harder or easier to walk in than speedplay cleats.

The pedals do come in different float versions.
