The Ones That Got Away
Let's tell our tales of the bikes we saw and wanted with all our heart but had to let go. Here is my tale of woe from last night.
I was walking back to work when I saw a large RV parked in the Denny's lot. It had two folding racks full of bikes on the back. All of the bikes were Walmart level junk, except for one. There was a bright red Schwinn Klunker 5 speed, perhaps the first mass produced mountain bike. Normally, I am into 70's and 80's road racers, but something about this bike spoke to me. Sure, it weighed 50 pounds, and the brakes would lead to certain death on any downhill, but I just had to make an offer to the owner.
But where was he? I did not want to disturb all of the patrons in Denny's, so I put a note on the windshield and kept an eye on the parking lot from my office. Yet somehow the RV drove off between glances. Gone! Maybe the owner saw the note and will call me later today, but the doubt grows with each passing minute.
So dig deep into your bruised psyche, and share your tale of the one that got away.
