Bikes: Trek 520 & an old huffy mtb

I was pulled over by a cop while biking with my girlfriend and son. We were on our way back from visiting her mom on one of two roads we could take. One of which runs next to the interstate has very fast driving traffic on a pretty narrow road (55mph+). The only alternative is a fairly narrow 2 lane road with a 35mph speed limit.

I was riding towards the right of the road and my girlfriend on my immediate left (I was pulling our boy). We were almost to the end of the road (ends in a T-shaped intersection) when we were pulled over by a cop. First he tried telling us to ride single file all the way to the right. I explained how people try to squeeze by when we ride like that and its not safe, especially with our 2 year old along for the ride. I mentioned something about how the traffic is supposed to pass completely in the other lane whether i'm riding on the far right, in the middle, or 2 bikes wide. He got pretty grumpy/rude and started telling me how we needed to avoid that road all together (we are most certainly not going on the other road i mentioned, especially with the little one). He tried to threaten me with a ticket. I stood my ground and told him if he gave us a ticket we would fight it, as we were well within our legal rights. Then he walked back in his car and drove away.
