When you say "patina" do you mean rust ? If so, clear coating won't help much. Also, it really isn't necessary. I would clean it up and wax it. Now if you have a bike with significant wear, and clean steel showing, then a clear coat will help it for a few years....depending on how the bike is cared for in the future.
