Oh the Cannondale Synapse 6 is a great bike..... I was riding a 5 for a few seasons and loved the geometry (and I'm 52 also). Take the drop bar.... had a bit more height with an upright stem and add some cyclocross top brake levers.... you will be just as comfortable as on a hybrid and have the brake levers in reach when you are riding on the tops.
