As a student, you may want to look for a bike that's under the theft radar. (doesn't look that great.)
I recommend anyone to hold off on Craigs until one gains a bit of bike knowledge and can know what to look for. I'd visit one of the LBS in the Bay area. You could probably get set up with a solid used bike in your price range that's the right size.
