Also, these Phil discs are meant to be a primary braking system and not drag brakes. When I mentioned to the previous owner of this tandem that I was going to be updating the brakes scoffed at the idea that they weren't safe. He and his wife had logged 8K miles or something on them. They stop on a dime, as well or better than my Avid BB7 road discs on my commuter, but like I mentioned - I would like to add calipers for piece of mind.
If it was a single, I probably would just ride the Phils and never think twice about it.
