Yeah, I didn't mean it was a dick comment in that I was making fun of said people, just that it was generalizing that SS/FG riders are a bunch of hipsters (aren't you )

Understood about the loss of brake and I don't want to ever find myself in the situation you describe.

I have asked in the tandem forum, and spoken to several veteran tandem riders and the consensus has been that simply adding a quality dual pivot front brake with good pads will be more than enough. I would like ADDED piece of mind (above "more than adequate") and thus, I was asking simply about options for a FOURTH brake. I'm not saying I want to run just a Phil front disc and a home fabricated bolt-on rear and start towing my wife and children down windy descents...

This will be a sunny weekend, mostly paved bike trail riding bike. If we decide we love riding tandem, I will invest some real money in either having a custom built or having this beautiful Reynolds 531 Bill Boston customized to fit our needs.
