+1 on finding a good bicycle co-op and checking out their used rides. Lock the hell out of it too, universities are havens for bike theft.
I don't think anyone ever messed with my bike and I only had a U-lock and cable. I had a used mountain bike, but it probably wasn't the smartest move to pick one with XT rear derailleur on it even though everything else was STX-RC. I didn't think about theft at the time and mostly thought about durability, being used and all, when I picked it; well that and it was the right size and price.
