How to ride in the city safely???

Right now I live the subbrubs of Washington DC. Cars are still impatient about me being on the street on a bike. They wont run me off the road but they will get extremelly close, its not like i am goign slow at 28 mph. I increase my speed to prevent drivers from getting extremely annoyed and i stay to the closest to teh curb. Its working for me, had no really big problems.

But, I am about to head down to school in Atlanta. That place is totally different from teh 2 years i have been there. This would be the frist year riding down there.

What should i expect??

Any advice so i dont get killed?

Or should i just stuck to the local and neighorborhood roads, but this would be a hard option since i will need to be on some major roads to get to a neighborhood or so. And riding on the sidewalk is annoying and dangerous due to pedistrians. And probably illegal in the city of Atlanta.
