My running shoes have never worked well for cycling for a couple of reasons: one, they're made to have a flexible sole, which robs pedaling power, and mine are stability type shoes and the relatively wide heel platform tends to hit the crank arm.

I second the suggestion of a mountain bike shoe without cleats installed.

And by the way, everyone, they're called toe clips, not cages.
