Consider getting Mountain Bike shoes. They come with a cover over the cleat screw holes and you'll always have the option of going clipless in the future if you want.
+1. Something like the Shimano MTL33L. I use them for touring since they are pretty good to walk in. And they are made sturdy. They are type of shoe suggested above. You can, but don't have to, use cleats. Just leave the cover on if you don't use clipless pedals.
