Exactly...a man who knows his bikes and understands why frame height is as important as top tube length which as noted is too short for the OP.
Why I suggested the OP try a TCR if going to an XL...will give him a bit more aero position and still maintain a decent size steerer tube....a happy medium for handlebar drop. All depends again on the goals of the rider...a cruiser may prefer a monster steerer tube to get bars up around the seat but those aspiring for a bit more speed will likely prefer the TCR.
