If there's an appliance dealer close enough, ask him for a refrigerator or stove box. Cut it into big sheets to make throwaway work mats. If you're a pig with oil or solvents, put a plastic drop cloth underneath as a backup. Bike boxes also work if the shop is close enough. They pay to have this cardboard tossed, so will be glad to have a sucker take it away for free.
