Why USA Cycling has no Para Cycling cat for road
I have wondered, since losing my leg, why USA Cycling has no separate cat for para cyclists (cyclists with a disability such as amputation, MS, brain injury affectin balance, etc). I have asked this question before, years ago, but this year they actually made a different category for MTB for para cycling but not road.
I'm curious about any input as to the reason based upon the following facts:
The best ranking US Paralympic cyclist is only a cat 3 on road in the USA system. This particular person is in the top 3 fastest leg amputees on the planet.
The UCI put in a para cat several years ago, along with the national governing bodies of many countries.
The only route for a para cyclist to compete with other disabled riders is to work their way into the US Paralympic system, which if you aren't Olympic quality you get weeded out quick and can't rank against other para cyclists anymore on any system existing except if you ride a hand cycle, rather than a traditional bike.
I raced road and MTB before losing my leg, and switched to doing TT on triathlon relay teams after simply because there was no system to rank me (USA Triathlon does have a class for that) and I hate triathlon but that was the best alternative from a competition standpoint.
So any ideas why USA Cycling is so slow to institute this? Especially as, like me, there are so many Iraq and Afghanistan injured entering the bike racing world?
