My PSA doubled in just one year - still technically within the 'normal' range for my age, but the jump was dramatic enough to raise the alarm flags. I went back two months later for a re-test and was higher yet. Made appointment for biopsy. Cancer found. At my age (52 at the time) I opted for a complete prostatectomy. I found out later that my maternal grandfather died of prostate cancer. Had it for several years and was in constant pain before succumbing (this was in the early '60s before the treatment options we have today). Also found that prostate cancer is common in my mother's family - four of my cousins have it as well!
