Good story. Interesting and properly spaced. Welcome back.
I've been doing more MUP riding on the commute to work. The scenery is great, but the riding is dangerous. I've had many narrow escapes, usually my fault.

It was past dusk and I came around a corner that was even more shaded from the ambient light.
All of a sudden I see two guys pushing bikes in front of me. I wasn't going at full speed, but fast enough (15-6 mph?) that I didn't have any time to go around them. I applied the brakes and yelled out "sorry"--fully expecting to hit something.
Somehow I threaded the needle and went between them without hitting anything. I would love to see a video replay of that maneuver. At any rate it scared the crap out of at least one of them (based on his yell).
I suppose the decent thing would have been to stop and apologize to them. But the whole incident was such a big facepalm that I kept on going and avoided the embarrassment and/or possible confrontation.
