If the chainring doesnt touch the chain stay then you are ok, no spacer needed. If oyu want to put a spacer you can add 1 or 2 mm spacers from a cassette for example but as long is not touching you are ok.
The other thing is that if you have problem setting up the group and you have a chain suck then it could be a problem, personally i never had a chainsuck ever, so pretty much depends on the riders luck and the habilities or skills of the mechanic doing the job.
Chain suck is probably what I'm scared of most. It's a CX bike so I'm worried that a gunked up chain might just decide to suck...and it would...er...suck. I'm dropping down 4-5 teeth on my big chainring so a shorter chain should increase the overall tension on the chain and make suck less probable.
