Can you borrow a bike to race now? I think that will tell you a lot.
"Stable at speed" is not really that important for cross because compared to the road there's a lot less speed and a lot of tight turning.
My position for cross is virtually identical to my road position, but with compact instead of classic bend drops and a slightly lower saddle. Saddle to bar drop and stem length are the same. Reach is the same.
