Barring catastrophic damage, I always wear my rear tire down to where the cords start showing. I notice no greater tendency to flat with worn tires. I agree with dopolina and others who suggest that though the thinner tire may be somewhat easier to puncture, thinner tread rubber is less likely to hold debris that would take a number of revolutions of the tire to work it's way through the cords and tube.
