As Achoo suggested, I agree in the winter/spring the sides of the road are more likely to contain more hazards..
But as I stressed before, one can cut the flats by at least 1/2 by checking the tire pressure often.
A road tire pumped to 110 or 120psi in my experience will drop down to 90 within 3 or 4 days.
after that the loss slows down, but bike tires inherently loose pressure quickly.
