Have you looked into the wonderful things that are going on with belt drives and internally geared hubs? They seem like the ideal solution for commuting--especially in foul weather. Look at Civia, Trek Soho, and Spot just to name a few. The Trek Soho is attractive because you don't have to rob a bank to afford it.
