On the other hand, his sponsors wouldn't have much case. The marketing aspect has come and gone, and at the time they probably thought it was money well spent.
It really depends on the legal contract. If there is a clause stating that a subsequent positive result will trigger repayment then yes, Lance is liable. If there isn't any term on this then people will have a problem reclaiming their cash.
