He thought he could speak up about it because he had the credentials to do so - he earned the right. Unfortunately, speaking up made him the villain. How dare he crush this unbelievable dream of ours that some guy won seven TdFs and even beat cancer along the way. Lemond became an outcast because of it. Had his family and personal secrets aired because of it. Had his business and fortune take a hit because of it. But he did it because he loves the sport. If you had the credentials, the means, and loved the sport as much as Lemond does, would you have spoken up? Thing is, he had the guts to put all of that on the line. I admire him even more now because of this.

Lastly, sure ego's involved, but we've all got ego and we've all got plenty of standup, lifelong friends who've got even more ego. Doesn't make them bad guys - in fact, it makes them excel at what they do.
Excellent post. I have a few thoughts of my own about "ego".

There is a difference between a person with an ego, and an egotistical person. I agree, having an ego doesn't make one a bad guy, and does indeed help one to excel. As a matter of fact, having a certain amount of ego is essential to excelling and being a winner. Being egotistical can also help produce those same results, but there is then the by product of being the type of person who I, and many, don't like to be around. You know who they are, and you know the words that are used to describe them. IMO egotistical people may or may not be "bad guys", but I've run across many in my lifetime and I've never been drawn to them and I don't particularly like them.
