Is commuting by bike cheaper?

This week I bought new winter gloves ($40), ear warmer ($12), Chain degreaser ($11), Chain-L oil ($11), Shimano freewheel tool ($6) and a spoke wrench ($5), Oh yeah, and a Surly Ogre frame ($575).

Clearly not cheaper in this case.
