Actually, I'll ask my 60 yo sister who's a DO and ran a marathon last weekend. No shortage of doctor's advice, but it's always nice to hear from folks that have had it done (Thanks Daspydyr) and who are athletes.

IMO, Physical Therapists have their egos tied to your performance and recovery. If you can drop by whatever facility you might be using post surgery and ask top talk to a PT, that person would most likely be most helpful and up to date. Your sister also sounds like a good option. DO's think outside the box and aren't as dependent on MEDs, in my experience.
I was seeing a cardiologist who had lots of advice, but looked like he was hitting the Vegas Buffets pretty regular. I have since found one who practices what he preaches. He also rides regularly.
