RacerOne, I think this is awesome advice for your situation, and your son is lucky that you are doing this for him. It's very important that kids with diabetes learn how to handle things themselves and think about it.
However, it shouldn't be the ride's responsibility to take care of this adult. She needs to get to the point where she does this herself. I'm sure for your son you would check the bike for him before a ride, make sure his tires are at proper pressure, that his helmet is on right, etc. You wouldn't want to do this for other adults you're riding with. This is the diabetic equivalent of the same.
I try not to dwell on "diabetes sucks" and just think it's something I've got to deal with, and then I get a little more sense of accomplishment when completing a difficult physical task. That's just my take.
