Hasn't Hinault claimed over the years that his attacks were intended to break the field and help LeMond, knowing that Greg was strong enough to get back to him? Whether that's the truth only he knows.

I know I would have handled it differently than LeMond did after his win. Assuming that I felt that the Badger sandbagged me, I would just satisfy myself with knowing that I beat him when he was trying his damnedest to win, and been gracious in victory. I would have thanked him (publicly to the media anyway) for bringing out my best.

Greg's diplomacy has always been in short supply, though. It's an endearing trait when he's beating the drums against McQuaid and Verbuiggen. At other times, not so much.
