I race the small stuff on 32h handbuilts.
If it's a big race I'll pull out my race wheels. It's a lot of money for something that you don't really need.
The last crit I did cost me a Mavic Carbon wheel, didn't crash the course was just super rough. Just get yourself some bombproof wheels that can be rebuilt if busted up.
