I would add that -- depending on the city you live in -- attitudes will change over time. I occasionally felt as you do perhaps 7-8 years ago, but nowadays I run into many people who think carfree is a cool thing, even if they can't join in.
In the long run, none of this matters... do what you think is right and lets the chips fall where they will.
