We also caught up with nancy-sv in Boise, Idaho, on our way through. nancy and her family are well known for their epic ride from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego.

We feel privileged to meet people like them and share stories on our respective adventures.

Thanks for this report. When I first joined Bike Forums in 2008, as a previous tourist and then commuter / occasional centurian, Machka, Rowan, nancy-sv, and StephenH were subscribers I encountered early, and still regularly read when I happen upon their posts. In particular I recall this memorable post, which I have subsequently quoted a few times, when a fellow winter commuter asked, “When does Hardcore become Stupid?”:

Hardcore has clearly become completely stupid when you lose any fingers or toes to frostbite.

In each case, it's not just the weather that makes it hardcore or stupid, it's the degree of preparation and knowledge used in dealing with the weather.
