I've never seen a sharrow marking anywhere but the middle of the lane. Are the ones in adamhenry's area somewhere else?
If the lane is 10' wide (on the narrow side) and a door takes up 3' of that (
this graphic says 37" for a big truck), then the middle of the lane is well out of the door zone (and you're just at the edge of their "startle zone".) And this even assumes that this truck is parked on the far left edge of it's parking lane -- so far left that its left mirror extends past it.
I guess our sharrow markings are somewhat different than others. For example,
this one isn't in the middle of the lane, but it is also out of the door zone -- barely. I guess if the sharrow were any further to the right I'd have yet another reason to dislike them. (Though the simple idea that motorists get the idea that "no sharrow means bikes don't belong here" is sufficient, IMHO.)
