30 years ago, it was a different story. But i think buggy whips were popular then too.
40 years ago, some made the argument that "canti's " were the way to go. This of course meant Mafacs, they made a Criterium model that was for single bikes. Note the name. They were lighter than say Campagnolo brakes, but darn close to Weinmann 500's when also considering the bosses. You Could set up the frame with pista clearances though. I saw ONE guy who had this set up. ONE.
You were also tied in to Mafac brakes, which had a reputation as screamers, forget that the canti design took care of most of that.

In sum, there were few who dared to be different. If you were serious it was FULL Campagnolo. (Unless you rode for San Diego and were sponsored by Shimano)
