Thanks for the input guys. I think 8 sp. sounds like the way to go. I have some parts on hand that I am thinking I could use to just to get the bike rolling sooner, such as, a set of Deerhead derailleurs (off a Raleigh Portage), or a set of light action derailleurs (off a Miyata Six Fifteen GT). Both sets work great, and I think I have a couple touring crank sets as well. Just need to check the parts bin. Since I have the brakes, I am thinking I should just put these parts on to start with and then upgrade as I can. Does that seem reasonable? Do you think those derailleurs would wrap enough chain for 8 sp.? I'm pretty sure the bikes they came off were both 6 speed freewheels.
