Merida? Giant? Tons of scooters? Hot, humid city in a mountain basin? Sounds like you're in Taipei, Taiwan. If so I'm about an hour south of you. If not, I'm still betting you're in Asia.
I personally prefer Giant over Merida. Nothing against Merida in particular, but I've had good luck with Giant bikes and the Giant dealers I've had contact with.
