I was raised in Germany, so commuting by bike seems normal to me... but in America, it's so rare that commuters are seen as an especially obscene form of neo-luddite, and motorized traffic has no education or experience related to sharing the road with bikes. Therefore, I don't do it here, it's dangerous in a way that a European can't understand. Happily, I'll be moving to Tokyo soon, where my transportation costs will go from $1200/month to...well, if I amortize my breezer uptown 8 over the tine I'll be there....$50. But you really can't assume that what's normal in the Vaterland is normal for Amis.
